CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

It’s been two days since redoing my Fireworks Friends profile, and I still haven’t gotten any responses. I now know what it feels like to be Avery and dating—annoyed. I check my photo to see if it’s okay and not cropped in a weird way. Is it my photo? Sure, it’s close up, but I look presentable. I put on makeup for the occasion—bronzer and a bit of shimmery eye shadow. At least I look better than I usually do in the school carpool line.

Turning back to my chocolate, I mix in vanilla. It takes all my might not to lick the chocolate from the spatula. I review the recipe I wrote down for Vivian’s neighbor. She ordered one hundred chocolate vanilla truffles. The orders have been steadily coming in from word of mouth. The stripper situation hadn’t hurt my business, like I originally thought. One of these days, I’ll create an official website.

My phone buzzes and an alert comes through from the friendship app. Finally. My heart drops into my stomach. This could be my first real local friend! Licking the chocolate off my fingers, I scan the message.

“Hi there. I moved to the area recently and I’m looking to meet new people, whether for dates or friendship. I just graduated college and I’m …”

I had selected an age group, hadn’t I? I click the link to my profile. Nope, I missed it. Now I enter an age range from thirty-five to forty-five. I’m not sure I can hang with twenty-somethings. We wouldn’t have anything in common, especially now that I’ve started growing chin hairs. Seriously, I think they grow overnight. Or at least I hope they do, because if I’ve been walking around with them for a few days without noticing, just kill me now. What if most of the women on this app are between eighteen and twenty-five? That would be just my luck.

I consider hiring her as a babysitter. I’ll carve out time later to answer her and to look through other profiles of women I find interesting. I don’t know why I’ve been waiting for women to ping me first. I guess I’m afraid of rejection. Ugh. Now Beatrice is infiltrating my search for new friendships. I have to nip my negative thoughts in the bud.

Another message comes through. I’m starting to feel like the cool kid. Only took nearly forty years.

“Interested. I need new friends. I’ll explain why over drinks. Tomorrow seven PM? Carrie.”

This Carrie woman sounds more like me. Short and to the point. I click on the woman’s photo. It’s sexy and sultry. She’s probably on the dating side of this app too and used the same photo. She’s a lawyer, or so she says in her bio. I can’t be too sure. I don’t know how many women inflate their profiles to attract friends or mates. She likes to travel and has been to more than thirty countries. She’s a runner. She’s never been married and doesn’t have children.

I wash my hands and finish up my recipe before I respond.
